What is At-Large anyway?

I have been on several different city committees and commissions over the last 5 years, in At-Large roles. That has given me the opportunity to seek input from across the community and learn about many neighborhoods and unique parts of town and the different needs they have.

From new development in Ward 1, to redevelopment at sites like the Four Seasons Mall in Ward 3 and the Prudential development in Ward 4, I’m committed to serving all of Plymouth and to working for the common good of our community.

In the final days of the election season, I wanted to share one question I often get when I’m out talking with residents: What is At-Large anyway?

A map of Plymouth's 4 city council wards.
Plymouth's 4 wards

The simplest answer is that this city council seat represents the whole city, not a particular ward.

The city is divided into 4 wards, each with a council member, and the other three members of the city council are the mayor and two who serve city-wide.

I was once told by a council member that this is a great feature of our city council, because no matter where you live in Plymouth, you’re represented by a majority of the 7-member council. That would be your ward’s council member, the 2 at-large members and the mayor.

The four ward council members may bring the point of view of their ward’s constituents to the council, and the at-large members work to represent the whole community and the common good of all of Plymouth. That's my commitment: to listen to and represent all of our community members.
